Acting, Theatre, Play and Fun

Updated: Apr 12, 2023

ACTING IS…

When I was a student in college, one of the many assignments that I had to do was a paper titled ”Why Acting?” We had to express why we decided to pursue a career in the arts. While perhaps I should dig out that long ago writing piece from the depths of which it sits, that's not what this little blog, is about.

The theater and both watching performance and being a part of them has always been a joyous event for me. As a child, I had frequented multiple Shea’s shows, and a number of shows from various theaters around the community. I was enthralled. I wanted that. Now, I get to pave my way to that.

…Not A Real Job ?

Many actors have been accused in their time of “that's [acting] not a real job”, or “ Cool, and so what is your back-up plan?” People see that we have fun and that we get to play as a part of our work. It doesnt seem right or that we actually have to put work into this "fun little job". This seems like such a strange concept, but taking time to play, and to have fun, actually is super beneficial for your overall well being. Having a work - fun balance is easy when the work you do IS fun.

…A Fun Experience

Acting in short is a form of imaginative and physical play. By being able to use your imagination, you are fostering the power of creative problem solving, thinking outside the box, and even a little bit of physical exercise! One of the goals at Mercurie is to provide a safe and cool space for actors, performers, and artists alike to be able to collaborate together to use their imagination and creative skills to put on shows, and showcase the talent of performers from all walks of life.

…Problem Solving

A big part of the actor’s job is to figure out how to achieve what their character wants; there's a lot of problem solving that is involved with that. We call this the “Objective”. Actors use different tactics to get to their objectives, and try to navigate the obstacles in the way. The first time I heard this concept, I had such an epiphany, because I saw that pattern repeated in everything. We want, we go get, we have something stopping us, we work around it. What could be more human than that? Theatre in itself is a very problem solving based business. When planning the logistics of a show, directors, designers, and producers have to ask a lot ( and I do mean A LOT) of questions that all need an answer, and some of those questions can’t get answered until others are answered first.

It is a type of work that is filled with meetings and circular discussions, but also when it is figured out and it all comes together, it is really some of the most rewarding work that could be put out there.

…A Celebration!

Putting on a show is tough, but such a rewarding business. The first question always is: Where and when can we put on a show? Well, I am ecstatic to announce that Mercurie Studios will be presenting its first show on December 16, at 7:30 pm. Mark your calendars and come check out VARIETY HOLIDAZE, we will be sharing info regarding auditions and how to get tickets very, very soon!!
